Madrid, the 2022 World Capital of Sport

Named World Capital of Sport for 2022, Madrid has joined the ranks of the two other cities to have achieved this prestigious recognition: Guadalajara (Mexico) and Abu Dhabi. The city earned the title thanks to its major sports infrastructure, diverse range of services and activities and formidable calendar of international events. There can be no doubt that Madrid deserves this honour awarded by ACES Europe, the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation. There were many other reasons: the city also strives to ensure sports offerings for people with disabilities, it aims its efforts at every age bracket, it works to foster sport for girls and women, it helps sports clubs and associations via annual grants, and it develops an extensive programme of public-private partnership to boost sports activity through joint efforts, to name just a few initiatives.

On the most visible side of the city’s commitment to sport, it hosts countless major sporting events ranging from high-level competitions (including a football and a basketball league that are among the best in the world) to fun runs. Some of these events have become firm fixtures over the years and are eagerly awaited by the Madrileños as well as the foreign visitors who travel to the city to take part in them. We have highlighted some of the major events in Madrid’s 2022 sports calendar:
