The event—classified as a Gold Label Race by the International Athletics Federation, which is the highest level of excellence—is on the same scale as such well known races as those in New York, London or Berlin. It also forms part of the Rock ‘n' Roll Marathon Series, the world’s biggest running circuit, and features live music performances on over 20 stages, a finish line festival, a parallel 10-kilometre race and another half-marathon, turning Madrid into an absolute sporting celebration. In 2022, more than 30 thousand runners from 86 countries participated in the three races. The marathon was won by two Ethiopian athletes: Abdela Godana Gemeda (2:08:42) in the men’s race and Dagne Siranesh Yirga (2:24:37) in the women’s. 2023 will see the 45^th edition held on 23 April.

The race boasts one of the most beautiful routes on the international calendar: departing from Paseo de la Castellana, it allows you to take in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the Cuatro Torres Business Area, the Faro de Moncloa observation deck, Casa de Campo Park, Madrid Río Park and the Prado Museum, which is located alongside the finishing line right where Paseo del Prado meets Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo. The warmth of the enthusiastic, sport-loving Madrid crowd is the icing on the race's cake.
