Transhumance Festival

    Information

On Sunday, 22 October 2023 (date to be confirmed), the Transhumance Festival returns to the streets of Madrid, a traditional event that has left some unforgettable images in recent decades of thousands of sheep clogging up the capital’s main streets. Since 1994, this event has advocated the role of transhumance and extensive farming as a tool for the preservation of the biodiversity and the fight against climate change.

This event was initiated in 1994 to help persuade Parliament pass the new Drovers Roads Law, recognising drovers’ roads, tracks and paths as public property and unique heritage in the world. It is organised by the Trashumancce and Nature Association with the support of the Concejo de la Mesta Association, MAVA Foundation, Madrid City Council and WWF/ Adena España.
