    Information

The flamenco guitarist, Tomatito, is responsible for opening the latest edition of the Suma Flamenca festival on 18 October in the Green Hall at the Teatros del Canal. This event presents the world première of his latest show, De la Plaza Vieja a Santa Ana, in which he is accompanied by a group of carefully selected musicians based on their affinity with the gypsy musical spirit to share this captivating rhythm and emotive power.

José Fernández Torres (Almería, Spain, 1958) better known by his artistic name, Tomatito, was born surrounded by flamenco guitars. He grew up to the rhythm of the songs of his father, who was also called Tomate, and his grandfather, Miguel Tomate.  He is also the nephew of the legendary flamenco guitarist, Niño Miguel. At the age of twelve, he embarked on his musical career, performing at flamenco houses, such as the Taberna Gitana, where Paco de Lucía was a spectator and he met Camarón de la Isla.

He started participating in the leading Andalusian flamenco festivals and built up a reputation collaborating with great flamenco singers, such as Enrique Morente, La Susi or José Menese. He accompanied Camarón de la Isla in the last 18 years of his life, with whom he built up an extensive list of records, forming a duo at flamenco festivals and recitals in Spain and in cities like Montreux and New York.

Following the disappearance of the legendary Camarón de la Isla, he embarked on a promising career as a concert guitarist, becoming a leading solo performer on the flamenco guitar scene.  Throughout his career, he has worked with artists from all over the world and inspired a whole generation.

Among other events and prestigious venues, he has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican in London, Carnegie Hall in New York (alongside Enrique Morente), Cirque D'Hiver and Salle Pleyel in Paris.
