Spanish Masterpieces from The Frick Collection
Information
Spanish painting from The Frick Collection, considered to be one of the world’s greatest art collections, will be on display at the Prado National Museum (Hall 16 A. Villanueva) next spring, from 7 March to 2 July. It is made up of nine emblematic works by Velázquez, El Greco, Murillo and Goya, which will be on display in Spain thanks to the support of the Community of Madrid.
Most of the paintings on display were acquired by the industrialist, philanthropist, and museum founder, Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919). Today, his collection is considered to be one of New York’s greatest cultural treasures.
The Frick Mansion, where these works are normally housed, is currently undergoing architectural renovation, so the museum is displaying its collection at the Frick Madison. This situation has prompted the special agreement to temporarily loan paintings to the Prado National Museum, none of which, with the exception of two paintings, have ever been seen in Spain since they originally left the country.
