Querencia. Antonio Najarro Company and the Orquesta de Extremadura

Finished
    Information

From 14 to 16 July, in the Central Courtyard of the Conde Duque Cultural Centre, Antonio Najarro will be opening the programme for the summer festival Veranos de la Villa 2022 with his new show, a journey through the beauty of the bolero school of dancing, stylised dance, traditional dance, and flamenco.

This is his company’s sixth production, in which he aims to revisit the origins of dance through his personal choreographic vision. In it, he stages eleven scenes performed by 16 dancers that refer to the inclination or tendency of people to return to the place where they grew up or visit frequently.

In addition, the artists are accompanied by live music performed by the Orquesta de Extremadura, conducted by Andrés Salado, creating a piece in which different folk styles are combined, making use of typical dance attire and accessories such as the traditional Cordoba style hat, the Manila shawl, the Spanish cape, the bata de cola flamenco dress, and castanets, an instrument that characterises Najarro, extolling the beauty and the interpretive and aesthetic projection of national dance.

Born in Madrid in 1975, Antonio Najarro is a dancer and choreographer who set up his own company in 2002. In 2011, he was appointed director of the Ballet Nacional de España, a position he held until 2019. With many distinctions to his credit, he has been awarded the Music and Independent Creation Prize, the Pop Eye Dance Award 2019, and the Unidos por la Danza Prize 2019 in the category of dance, presented by Fundación Victor Ullate. He has worked with Spain’s greatest flamenco dancers, including Rocio Molina, Olga Pericet, Rubén Olmo, and Manuel Linan, and has designed works for the Ballet Nacional de España, such as Suite Sevilla, Eterna Iberia and Icaro.
