Luisa Fernanda
Information
From 21 to 30 June, the Zarzuela Theatre is hosting a new production of the great lyrical comedy in three acts, Luisa Fernanda, one of the best zarzuelas of the 20th century which propelled its composer, Federico Moreno Torroba, to fame.
Premiered at the Calderón Theatre in Madrid, on 26 March 1932, this work will be performed at the Zarzuela Theatre with the collaboration of the Community of Madrid Orchestra and the La Zarzuela Theatre Resident Choir, conducted by Antonio Fauró.
Set in the Elizabethan period, just before the 1868 revolution, it tells of the adventures revolving around the tavern run by Doña Mariana. Luisa Fernanda, a beautiful young woman who is in love with Javier Moreno, a colonel in the Spanish army, lives there.
In spite of the fact that Javier hardly goes to see her, she still loves him and rejects Vidal Hernando’s insinuations. Although the latter does not lose hope and believing that Javier is a liberal, he declares himself a monarchist, not so much for his conviction but rather to contradict his opponent. However, Javier meets the beautiful Duchess Carolina, who uses her arts and charm to pull him away from Luisa and attract him to the monarchic cause.
