Los gavilanes
Information
The famous director, Antonio Fauró (The Tempest, Maruxa or Cops and Robbers), directs this zarzuela in three acts, written by José Ramos Martín with music by Jacinto Guerrero. It is a production that can be seen from Wednesday to Sunday from 8 to 24 October at the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
It is set in a village on the Provençal coast in 1845. Juan, an “Indian” who had made his fortune in Peru, appears there. Everyone thought that he was dead, but Juan returns to his birthplace with his pockets full of money. As soon as he settles in, he lavishes jewels and expensive gifts on his brother, his sister-in-law and his nieces.
On hearing the news, Mayor Clariván asks Juan to pay for the works needed in the municipality, forgetting that they used to be rivals. Juan also discovers that his great love, Adriana, is now a widow, poor and has a daughter called Rosaura.
Juan pays all of the debts of Adriana’s family and announces that he wishes to marry Rosaura, which causes a scandal in the village and he is nicknamed the sparrow hawk as they ridicule the fact that he has caught a dove. However, Rosaura is in love with a young boy of her own age and they plan to elope.
