The theatre company LETSGO has produced a musical adaptation of the famous tale by Roald Dahl. A show that stars comedian Edu Soto as Willy Wonka, which can be enjoyed with family or friends from 17 September to 9 April in the Espacio Ibercaja Delicias.
This children's novel, published in 1964, has been adapted for cinema twice: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), directed by Mel Stuart and starring Gene Wilder, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.
The musical's storyline remains true to the original, presenting Charlie Bucket, a boy from a poor family who wins a golden ticket that gives him access to a magical tour of the eccentric Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Charlie and four other children from all over the planet embark on a journey that introduces them to fantastical characters, such as the Oompa-Loompas, as they experience incredible adventures amid chocolate waterfalls, crazy squirrels, a large glass elevator, and a whole host of other surprises.
The play aims to introduce children to the world of theatre whilst at the same time reinforcing the concepts of friendship and respect by mixing them with a hint of madness. The musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first premièred in London's West End in 2013, breaking box office records until 2017. That same year it moved to Broadway and travelled around the United States in 2018.
In 2019, it embarked on a tour of Australia that lasted until 2021, visiting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. It has also been translated into other languages and was performed in Italy and Norway in 2019, and in Brazil, France, and Denmark in 2021.
Edu Soto is an actor and comedian who rose to fame in 2002 with the programme Una altra cosa and thanks to his character Mario Olivetti. From there he was signed by Andreu Buenafuente to appear in his late-night TV programme, playing characters like Neng de Castefa, Miguel Chiclé and the Notary. He has also acted in films such as Tapas, La luna en botella and Mortadelo y Filemón. Misión: Salvar la Tierra. And he has lent his voice to animated features such as Vecinos invasores. As a hobby, he began to take singing lessons and then put together his own band, D2.
LETSGO is a producer and promoter that has staged hit musicals such as Ghost, The Addams Family, Dirty Dancing and The Hole saga. In September 2021, it received the Innovation and Sustainability Award from Madrid City Council on World Tourism Day.
