The Bridges of Madison County, The Musical

    Information

Alberto Negrín is premièring this hit Broadway musical in Spain, winner of two Tony Awards, which is based on the novel by Robert James Waller and the film by Clint Eastwood. The musical features the singer and actress from Barcelona, Nina, and the Argentinian actor, Gerónimo Rauch, and can be seen from 9 November until 9 April 2023 at the Teatro EDP Gran Vía with performances from Tuesday to Sunday.

The libretto was written by Marsha Norman in 2014 and includes music and lyrics especially written for this production by Jason Robert Brown.  The show was premièred on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York (United States), and starred Kelli O’Hara and Steven Pasquale and was directed by Bartlett Sher.

Now the romantic story is coming to Spain with all of the emotion and sensitivity of its original text.   It is set in Madison County, in the state of Iowa (United States), in 1965, where Francesca lives with her husband and children.  Whilst they are away for a few days, visiting a fair, she meets the photographer, Robert Kincaid, who has come to the state to photograph the covered bridges of Madison County for a National Geographic article. Feeling alone, Francesca invites Robert Kincaid to have dinner and a passion is awakened that neither of them had ever felt before.  Now, Francesca must choose between her family or this newly found passion.

The book by Robert James Waller, written in 1992, was taken to the big screen in 1995 by Clint Eastwood, who starred in the film alongside Meryl Streep. The film was a box office hit and received excellent reviews.  Meryl Streep was also nominated for an Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Actress.  It was also nominated for the Golden Globe for the Best Film – Drama.

The popular singer, Nina, brings Francesca to life. The artist born in Barcelona in 1966 boasts an artistic career spanning 40 years in music, television and musical theatre with well deserved acclaim from the public and critics alike.  In musical theatre, she has performed in shows like Cabaret, Corre, Corre Diva and Mamma Mia!, in which she also performed the role played by Meryl Streep in the film, Donna.

The Argentinian performer and actor, Gerónimo Rauch (Buenos Aires, 1978), plays the role of Robert.  He has a great voice and an extensive career in musicals in Spain and England, with shows like Les Miserables, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar or The Physician. On London’s West End, he has also played Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera.
