Aladdin: The Musical

New
    Information

From 24 March to 3 September 2023, the Coliseum Theatre is playing host to the Stage Entertainment production of Aladdin, the musical based on the 1992 Disney animated film inspired by one of the tales from One Thousand and One Nights. The musical has been viewed by over 10 million people around the world, and it is being currently staged in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Mexico and Japan, which will soon be joined by Spain.

Aladdin tells the story of Aladdin, a street urchin in the fictional city of Agrabah, tricked by the Royal Vizier Jafar into retrieving a special oil lamp.

Thwarting Jafar’s efforts to cheat him, Aladdin keeps the lamp, only to rub it and meet the eccentric and powerful genie who lives in it. The Genie grants Aladdin three wishes. Aladdin uses his first wish to become a prince to woo Princess Jasmine, and promises to use his third wish to free the Genie from servitude. When Aladdin arrives in Agrabah as a prince, Jafar recognises him and threatens to reveal his true identity…

The Disney film was released in 1992 to critical and commercial success. It garnered two Academy Awards, for Best Original Score and Best Original Song – “A Whole New World”, which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Broadway musical now coming to Spain features all music by Alan Menken – winner of eight Academy Awards and a Tony Award, among many other accolades, for the music he composed for Beauty and the Beast, Newsies and Sister Act –, lyrics by Howard Ashman – recipient of two Academy Awards for “Under the Sea” (The Little Mermaid) and “Beauty and the Beast” (Beauty and the Beast) –, Tim Rice – winner of three Academy Awards for Best Original Song for “A Whole New World” (Aladdin), “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” (The Lion King) and “You Must Love Me” (Evita) – and Chad Beguelin – who has received six Tony Award nominations for The Prom, Aladdin and The Wedding Singer. The text was written by Beguelin too, and the production was directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, winner of a Tony Award and other accolades for The Book of Mormon.

The creative team also includes Bob Crowley, winner of seven Tony Awards, as scenic director; Natasha Katz (six Tony Awards) as lighting designer; Gregg Barnes (Two Tony Awards) as costume designer; and Ken Travis as sound designer.

Stage Entertainment has broad experience in the production of musical comedies, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Anastasia, Tina and Les Misérables.
