Tribute to "La Cabina" by Antonio Mercero

New
    Information

Chamberí is home to this unique monument that pays tribute to the director, Antonio Mercero, for his contribution to turning Madrid into a film city and a cultural reference.

The iconic telephone box is in Plaza del Conde del Valle de Suchil, close to the place where the film was shot, between numbers 6 and 8 in Calle Rodríguez San Pedro. It is a replica of the telephone boxes of that period, raised on a pedestal on which a plaque has been placed with an inscription stating that it is in memory of the Basque director.

The initiative to install this original tribute arose from the scriptwriter, David Linares, in 2018, upon the death of Mercero.  After obtaining much popular support, Madrid City Council unanimously approved its installation in 2019, with the collaboration of the Telefónica Foundation and the Film Academy.

La Cabina was directed by Antonio Mercero in 1972, with the script by José Luis Garci and featuring José Luis López Vázquez. It was first broadcast on Televisión Española on 13 December 1972 and a year later, it won an International Emmy Award for the Best Television Film and a Silver Fotogramas for the Best Television Performer for its leading character.
