San Francisco el Grande Gardens
Information
This 4,200 square metre botanical garden is located in the Las Vistillas area, which takes its name from the spectacular views over the west of the city, perched on a small plateau, next to the Royal Basilica of Saint Francis the Great, in the exact spot that was once occupied by a convent. From its viewpoint, one of the best sunsets in Madrid can be enjoyed.
Since 2007, the space has been turned into a themed dahlia garden, the former Saint Francis Dahlia Garden. Later, the dahlias were replaced with 21 varieties of rose bushes, due to their capacity to adapt to the Madrid climate and their abundant flowering, between May and June.
The garden has a set of sculptures, The Dream of Saint Isidore, by Santiago Costa, which dates back to 1952, in which the patron saint of Madrid is portrayed with an angel resting a hand on his head, inviting him to sleep.
