Information
Antonio Palacios built this building located on the corner of Alcalá and Caballero de Gracia Streets between 1933 and 1945. It is the last building he made in Madrid showing his technological evolution.
Without leaving the classical order behind completely, Palacios turns to a mixture of tradition and avant-garde introducing new materials in his constructions, paving stones on the façade, stainless steel on the stand above the main entrance and the glass barrel vault in the operations room. The façade on the Alcalá Street has a monumental arch, while the one on Caballero de Gracia Street is simpler, formed by two symmetrical convex bodies enclosing an entrance.
Today, it is home to the headquarters of the Department for Culture, Tourism and Sport and the Sala Alcalá 31 exhibition hall, whose programme specialises in national and international visual arts.
