Church and Convent of Santa María Magdalena

    Information

This was a charity founded in 1623 to accommodate street women who needed help to get away from the bad life, hence the name "Recogidas" by which is popularly known. From that time only the remains of the old church, the date of construction and creator of which was unknown, was rebuilt in 1897 by García Guereta, who remade the façade with classic traces and a belfry at its centre.

The monastery, located in the Chueca district, rebuilt in 1916 by Jesus Carrasco with primitive traces, shaping it around two large courtyards, with L shaped corridors. The brick façade with masonry tiers evokes domestic and Convent architecture of the seventeenth century, but it also introduces vanity with archways which break the Baroque tradition.

In the 1980s it was restored and transformed internally to the offices of the General Union of Workers by José Luis Martín and Francisco Pol, in collaboration with Santiago Pardo and Juan Miñé.
