Welcome to Madrid
Vallehermoso's bright green track will once again shine with the best athletics on the planet on 22 July 2023 at the 40th edition of the WACT/Europe Silver Meeting Madrid 2023, which is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver circuit. A host of national and international athletes will be competing here at the peak of the season.
The history of athletics and the Vallehermoso Stadium have intertwined over the decades, as this venue has played host to some great athletes, including Carl Lewis, Merlene Ottey, Allyson Felix, Blanka Vlasic, Said Aouita and Javier Sotomayor, among many others.
Another famous chapter in the history of Vallehermoso was the defeat of Edwin Moses, the then world record holder for 400m hurdles and unbeaten for nine years, nine months, and nine days (122 consecutive wins), at the hands of Danny Harris in 1987. Above all it has provided the backdrop for moments of ultimate glory, world records. The track at Vallehermoso has witnessed two records being set since its opening in 1961: one-hour race walk, set by Mexican Daniel Bautista in 1978 with 14,430m; and the pole vaulting record set by Russian Yelena Isinbayeva in 2005 when she jumped 4.95m.
