Welcome to Madrid

Opposite Cibeles Palace, on the traffic island at the beginning of the stretch that goes to Puerta del Sol, you’ll find this monument which pays tribute to all of the victims of the Covid pandemic. It was unveiled on 15 May 2020, the day of San Isidro, the city’s patron saint.

Designed by the prestigious architect Carlos Rubio Carvajal, the brazier consists of a 2m-wide circular piece of black steel, similar to a giant wheel, resting on a black steel bowl. A small plaque in front of the monument reads Vuestra llama nunca se apagará en nuestros corazones (“Your flame will never go out in our hearts”).

The monument is standing on a concrete platform, which is covered with a layer of granite.
