Welcome to Madrid
Located in the middle of a roundabout on the Paseo de la Castellana, this monument is dedicated to the historian, journalist, academic, public speaker and politician from Cadiz, Emilio Castelar Ripoll.
It is a complex work by Mariano Benlliure. It is a stone base that allows figures to be placed on each of its sides. On the main side, facing southwards, we can find the bronze figure of Emilio Castelar, and at his feet lies a marble Venus, an allegory to the truth, towards which the bronze figures of a worker, a soldier and a student rise, representing Work, Effort and Study. On the opposite side, there are two classical public speakers: Cicero and Demosthenes who observe and listen to Castelar. Finally, at the rear, there is a bronze relief dedicated to Castelar’s speeches in favour of the abolition of slavery in the former Spanish colonies.
