Welcome to Madrid

This archive, located in the Arganzuela area, is the centre that files the documents generated by the Government and Administration of the Community of Madrid, as well as their previous institutions, which are in the phases of intermediate and historic archives.

The third and current headquarters of the archive is located in the 'El Águila' former beer factory. It is a complex where the ‘Joaquín Leguina’ Regional Library of Madrid can also be found. The complex was built in the Neomudejar style, characterised by the bricks and tile details that can still be appreciated in today’s Legal Deposit building and is one of the best examples of industrial architecture from the first quarter of the 20th century.

The archive is spread over 4 different but interconnected buildings, covering a total area of nearly 29,000 square metres: a deposits building, with more than 83,000 linear metres of shelving; offices and customer service building; the building for new entries, which houses workshops for the restoration, binding and reproduction of documents; and the multipurpose building, where there are several exhibition areas and an assembly hall.

Exhibition Hall

The Regional Archive also has a hall where it organises various exhibitions in which the history of Madrid is one of its key points.  The successive exhibitions that have been held in recent years, organised by the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage, through the General Sub-Directorate for Archives and Documentary Management, have awakened the interest of residents of Madrid in the rich documentary heritage held at the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid and the Historic Archive of Protocols of Madrid.

The exhibitions have been designed to pass on knowledge of the archives to all audiences, increasing the number of visitors and obtaining greater recognition.

ZonaZero ExpoArchives

The main hall of the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid (Floor 0) has been turned into a permanent exhibition space in which long term exhibitions will coexist with a museum area, where a careful selection of documents belonging to two archives managed by the Community can be seen: Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid and the Historic Archive of Protocols of Madrid.
