Cerería Víctor Ortega

    Information

Chandlers were set up under the auspices of the church and Ortega is no exception. Based near the church of Real Colegiata de San Isidro, on Calle Toledo in La Latina, it still produces handcrafted wax candles.

The workshop is separated from the shop area, which preserves its original wooden counter, by two pillars. You can see the church candles, fancy candles and bell-shaped candles hanging from the ceiling to cool and dry. There are candles in all kinds of colours and sizes, animals, votive offerings and small lamps.

The shop was founded in 1893 by Victor Ortega and was originally owned by some relatives who brought Victor to work with them when he was still very young. As this kind of business is usually passed down from parents to offspring, the master candle maker José Manuel Ortega is the third generation to run the shop, even though candles are not used as widely as in bygone days.
