Welcome to Madrid
A few metres from the Plaza de Callao you can find the izakaya Hattori Hanzo, a modern Japanese bar which recreates the spirit of authentic Japanese bars and, distancing itself from the usual sushi, offers a menu based on the typical dishes of traditional Japanese cuisine.
Hattori Hanzo recreates a typical Japanese street, with paving stones with decorated manhole covers and yatai stands – stalls where you can grab something to eat. In addition to a large bar that has a charcoal-fired barbeque on one end where different types of kebab are cooked, it has a large open-plan dining room where diners eat sat on the floor in the traditional Japanese manner.
Amongst the main dishes served at this bar, okonomiyaki (Japanese omelette), kaarage (fried marinated free-range chicken) and ebi mayo (king prawns in tempura with spicy mayonnaise) stand out, on menus which can be topped off with desserts such as the famous doriyakis (sponge cake with sweet red bean paste) or matcha to azuki keki (green tea and sweet red bean cake).
