The Prado Museum is hosting its main exhibition for spring 2023 from 28 March to 9 July.   The exhibition will offer a complete review of the contribution by this great Bolognese master to the art of his time, from the most recent art-historical contributions to the influence of his iconographic models on various key artists of the so-called Spanish Golden Age.

Curated by Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos, Associate Director of Curatorship and Research, and David García Cueto, Head of the Department of Italian and French Painting up to 1800, the exhibition will bring together around 100 works, including painting, sculpture and graphic art. Paintings and sculptures by his contemporaries will be displayed in dialogue with Guido Reni’s creations in order to encourage reflection on the multiple interactions with the other art form that is evident in his paintings. Some of the works will be on display for the first time while others will be presented after having undergone a complex restoration process.

The Prado Museum currently has around 20 works by the Italian painter, as well as 15 created at his studio by known artists, including such iconic works as Hippomenes and Atlanta, which the art gallery has studied and restored for this project.  There is also one of the versions of Saint Sebastian, an image by Guido Reni created with such skill that its influence on later artists remains today.

In addition to the set of works by the Italian artist, there will also be paintings by other artists from the 16th and 17th centuries on display, who also featured in two of the most fruitful centuries of the European artistic culture, such as Tiziano, the Carracci, Caravaggio, Zurbarán, Ribera or Murillo.

The works belonging to the Prado Museum’s Collection and those on loan from Spanish institutions, such as National Heritage or the National Archaeological Museum, bring together more than 50 works from institutions, such as the Louvre Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of London, the National Art Gallery of Bologna or the Borghese Gallery.
