Welcome to Madrid
The Fernán Gómez Cultural Centre joins in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso, which will be held in 2023. From April to June, the cultural centre will host an exhibition devoted to the painter from Malaga with images by the French photographer, Lucien Clergue, which will be rounded off with Brigitte Baer’s personal archive.
The exhibition offers a journey through the work of the French photographer, Lucien Clergue, with whom the painter, Pablo Picasso, had a great friendship, which Clergue reflected in his book, Picasso, mon ami. This book contains a series of 38 unpublished black and white and colour photographs taken of the well-known artist.
This exhibition will focus on the most intimate and everyday aspects of the painter’s life and will be rounded off with the personal archive of Picasso’s graphic researcher, Brigitte Baer.
In 2023, the ephemerides of two great Spanish painters will be commemorated: the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso and the centenary of the death of Joaquín Sorolla. Madrid City Council commemorates these anniversaries by organising various cultural activities that will pay tribute to these artists.
Celebrating Picasso 1973-2023 aims to highlight the career of an essentially European artist who, with a deep knowledge of the heritage and principles of tradition, as well as an understanding of both classicism as an ethical value and of modern issues in art, has projected universal symbols, such as Guernica, throughout the world, which today is a collective emblem of the defence of human rights.
