Welcome to Madrid
The cult opera, The Nose, will be premièred at the Teatro Real with performances on 13, 15, 17, 19, 27, 29 and 30 March. This production includes the famous and irreverent production by the Australian, Barrie Kosky, who was responsible for the last Magic Flute at the Madrid Theatre.
The show includes a cast consisting of 89 roles, which can be distributed among 33 singers, and the action is practically at a film pace. This production is a major challenge for any opera theatre due to its logistical complexity for the Stage Manager.
Based on a tale by Nikolái Gógol and premièred in Leningrad in 1930, The Nose was withdrawn prematurely due to the attacks by the Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians and did not return to the Soviet stage until 1974, just one year prior to the death of the composer. The show is as sharp in its content as it is modern on the musical side, whose libretto and music lacks musical structure but has sarcasm and is influenced by Meyerhold’s biomechanics.
It is now coming to the Teatro Real, in collaboration with the Royal Opera House, the Komische Oper Berlin and the Opera Australia, with Mark Wigglesworth as the musical director and production by the Australian, Barrie Kosky, who will be acting as the stage manager.
