Welcome to Madrid

The Sala Alcalá 31 in the Community of Madrid is hosting an exhibition from 14 February to 11 June 2023 that commemorates the 70th anniversary of the birth of the sculptor, Juan Muñoz, one of the most important European artists from the second half of the 20th century.

Curated by Manuel Segade, the exhibition commemorates the 70th anniversary of the birth of the Spanish sculptor in Madrid, Juan Muñoz (1953 - 2001).

In the 1970s, the artist travelled to England to study at Croydon College and later at the Central School of Art and Design. In 1982, he moved to the United States, where he completed his studies at the Pratt Centre in New York thanks to a scholarship.

It was in the early 1990s when Juan Muñoz started to create “narrative” works, breaking the limits of traditional sculptures.  Works based on installations of figures slightly smaller than in reality interacting mutually distributed around indoor and outdoor environments.  In his lead grey or wax coloured monochrome figures, he mainly used elements like paper-mâché, resin and bronze,  He won the National Award for Visual Arts in 2000.
