Welcome to Madrid

2023 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. Casa de Velázquez joins in this commemoration with an exhibition from September to November 2023 in which the artist’s graphic works enter into dialogue with archival photographs, letters and audiovisual documents.

The exhibition curated by Emmanuel Guigon, Director of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, takes on the form of a poetic-aesthetic journey that focuses on the question of creation and its variations. It will also include works created especially for the event by renowned contemporary artists. This plural and trans-disciplinary exhibition will be accompanied by an international seminar.

Its inspiration comes from the summer of 1957 when Picasso went into seclusion for four months and created a set of 58 paintings, inspired directly by Velázquez’s Maids of Honour and provoked by the discovery of a photo of the painter’s work which reconnected him with his first impressions on visiting the Prado Museum when he was a teenager.
