Tutankhamun. The Immersive Experience

Don't miss
    Information

MAD (Madrid Digital Arts) is hosting an immersive exhibition for all ages in Nave 16 at the Matadero Madrid cultural centre, which invites you to travel to Ancient Egypt and discover its great mysteries. Since its opening on 4 November, it has already been visited by more than 150,000 spectators and the exhibition has been extended until the spring as a result of its success.

The exhibition is a unique immersive experience that made its world première in Madrid, coinciding with the centenary of the discovery of the Pharoah’s tomb, and can only be seen at MAD Madrid Digital Arts, the city’s only permanent immersive exhibition centre, created exclusively to host major productions.

The exhibition invites you on a journey hand in hand with the Child Pharaoh into the history of a magical civilization, from which we have inherited countless cultural elements and which, in spite of everything, continues to captivate us with the enigmas that cover the sands of its deserts and are diluted in the waters of the River Nile.  It transports you to primeval time when the Gods arose from the Pyramids.  Wind, water and the forces of nature shape incredible myths along with those that are created by the Gods at the birth of the Pharaohs, like the main feature of the exhibition, Tutankhamen.

The secrets of the Nile can be discovered, touching the river marshes and the arid desert on which lavish temples were built thousands of years ago. The passage of time has meant that these majestic buildings are today dull and lacking the colour that covered their columns and reliefs. In this initiative, they can be seen in their original state, the way they were more than 3,500 years ago.

One of the most beautiful tombs, that of Tutankhamen, is considered to be one of the most extraordinary findings in the history of archaeology. Its discoverer, Howard Carter, tells in his own voice all of the details about the discovery of more than 5,500 objects, many of which are made of gold, 100 years ago.

The immersive show is rounded off with a description of Tutankhamen’s journey to the Underworld based on the paintings that appear in the funerary chamber of his tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. An interactive activities hall also enables the public to understand the hieroglyphic writing, or its first steps in the world of archaeology to discover great treasures as Howard Carter did in 1922.

This exhibition also has a virtual reality room, where the spectator features in a journey along the torturous paths of the Book of the Dead, reach the judgement of Osiris and, and if all of the tests are successfully passed, enter the eternal life in the Field of Reeds, the “afterlife” of the Ancient Egyptians.

This space spanning 2,000m2 offers a unique journey through the Pharaoh’s tomb, with 1,200m2 of screens, augmented reality to visit the “real size” tomb, in addition to the interactive activities room and the virtual reality room (the second largest in Europe) that enables you to enter the tomb and its treasures. This journey goes back more than 3,400 years in time.
