Welcome to Madrid

From 25 to 30 April, the Gallur Municipal Sports Centre is hosting the 2022 Absolute Badminton European Championship. An event that represents a huge organisational challenge for the Spanish Badminton Federation and which is joining the long list of major sporting events that will be taking place in the city to celebrate Madrid being the World Capital of Sport 2022.

A total of 11 athletes will represent Spain in the championship with the presence of the male pair of José Molares and Jaume Pérez and the mixed pair of Lorena Uslé and Alberto Zapico.

It is worth highlighting the triple national presence in the women's singles and two representatives in the men's singles, two pairs in the men's doubles, one pair in the women's doubles and another pair in the mixed doubles.

The Spanish athletes qualified to participate in the tournament are Pablo Abián and Kike Peñalver in the Men's Singles category; Carolina Marín, Bea Corrales and Clara Azurmendi for the Women's Singles; Carlos Piris-Joan Monroy and José Molares-Jaume Pérez for the Men's Doubles; the pair of Clara Azurmendi and Bea Corrales for the Women's Doubles; and the pair of Lorena Uslé and Alberto Zapico for the Mixed Doubles.

A championship that marks the return of Spanish badminton player Carolina Marín, three-time world champion (2014, 2015 and 2018) and five-time European champion (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021). An athlete who could win her sixth consecutive European title in Madrid.

The Gallur Municipal Sports Centre, where the competition will take place, is located in the neighbourhood of Los Carmenes, in La Latina. It has different facilities and every year it hosts the Villa de Madrid International Indoor Athletics Meeting. This is the second time that Spain has hosted the Badminton European Championship that has taken place since 1968; the previous time was in 2018 in Huelva.
