Welcome to Madrid

This traditional and typically ‘madrileño’ café-bar celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. Located in the heart of the ‘Madrid de los Austrias’ district, by Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace, inside and on the terrace of this café-bar you can enjoy the traditional gastronomy of Madrid, given a contemporary twist, and its exquisite selection of wines.

El Anciano rey de los vinos, founded in 1909 by Luis Morón, retains the typical features of Madrid’s traditional ‘tabernas’, with  its red façade and brightly coloured tiles. Inside there is room for up to 30 people, with a long bar, perfect for tapas, and a terrace area that has wonderful views of the Cathedral and the Royal Palace.

Its menu features traditional ‘taberna’ style dishes, such as Cazuela del Anciano, and Madrid style tripe stew, as well as tapas and classic sharing dishes with a touch of innovation and modernity. The desserts are homemade and include chocolate tart with creamy curd cheese, and the house special, coffee-flavoured crème brûlée.  And not forgetting its classic wine served with a sweet wafer.
