Marianela

Finished
    Information

Oliver Díaz directs an opera in concert version and in three acts based on the novel of the same name by Benito Pérez Galdós. It is an amorous tragedy that explores the complexity of the world and beauty that will be performed at the Zarzuela Theatre on 27 and 29 November.

With the participation of the Community of Madrid Orchestra and the Zarzuela Theatre Resident Choir, the libretto is the work of the poet and playwright brothers, Serafín and Joaquín Álvarez Quintero, who became famous at the end of the 19th century and early 1900.

It tells the story of Marianela, a young orphan with poor physical attributes who earns a living looking after Pablo, a well-off blind boy. Pablo only knows the world through the Marianela’s descriptions and his father’s readings.

Pablo ends up falling in love with Marianela and swears eternal love to her. Happy to be with such an honourable boy and to lead a fuller life, she accepts his courtship. However, everything becomes complicated with the arrival of Teodoro Golfín in the village, a doctor who can make Pablo see by means of an operation. Once completed, Pablo is able to see for the first time ever and mistakes his cousin, Florentina, who had come to visit him after the operation, for Marianela.
