Madrid offers free Internet access in both public spaces and private places for everyone to surf the World Wide Web without limits.
Tourist information and citizen service centres
The Plaza Mayor Tourist Information Centre, the City of Madrid tourist information offices and the City of Madrid Citizen Service Offices (Usera, Salamanca, Carabanchel, Chamartín, Tetuán, Moratalaz, etc.) are all Wi-Fi hotspots. Also, you can get free Internet access at the Centro, Arganzuela, Chamberí and Hortaleza Taxpayer Service Offices.
Outdoor wireless access points
You can also stay connected while being outdoors in downtown Madrid. There’s been Internet access in Plaza de Santo Domingo since 2007. Later, other strategic points in town joined this pioneering initiative: Plaza Mayor, in the heart of the historic district, Callao, Plaza de Olavide, in Chamberí, and others.
Parks and gardens
The Cecilio Rodríguez Gardens at El Retiro Park and Madrid Río Park are two of the green areas where you can get free wireless access with time restrictions.
Libraries
Bookworms can stay connected too. Readers at the National Library, on Paseo de Recoletos (off Plaza de Colón and Jardines del Descubrimiento) can surf the Web for free, looking for information to complement their readings or learning what they need to know about all kinds of services. Most public libraries in the region of Madrid have Wi-Fi hotspots for users too. Among them we can mention the Joaquín Leguina Regional Library, the Gloria Fuertes Town Library in Barajas, the Pablo Neruda Town Library in Ciudad Lineal, the Ana María Matute Town Library in Carabanchel, and the Pío Baroja Town Library in Arganzuela.
Universities
Universities and partner centres in Madrid are covered by Eduroam, the international roaming service for users in research, higher education and further education. Users can connect to the wireless networks by entering the password given by the university or centre.
Cultural centres
Today, most public cultural centres in Madrid offer free wireless access. Conde Duque, CentroCentro, Casa del Reloj and Casa de Vacas are some of the cultural venues where you can stay connected.
Museums
You can get free Wi-Fi in almost every museum in Madrid, from the grand galleries that make Paseo del Arte (Art Walk) to the History Museum or the Museum of San Isidro (The Origins of Madrid).
Wi-Fi on the bus
You can also check your mail or browse the Web as you get around or wait for the bus. The wireless network of the Madrid bus operator, Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT), covers all bus stops and about 2000 buses.
Shopping malls
There are Wi-Fi hotspots in most shopping centres in Madrid: La Vaguada, Plaza Norte 2, Las Rozas Village, Príncipe Pío, Moda Shopping.
Restaurants and coffee shops
With your drink or meal, most restaurants and coffee shops in Madrid will share their passwords with you to get wireless Internet access.
Wi-Fi at the airport
At Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport there is wireless Internet access in terminals T4 and T4S (cobertura por toda la terminal), and in the boarding and food areas in terminals T1, T2 and T3. You can connect and browse the Web using your mobile device or laptop for as long as you want, with limited download speed. In addition, Aena Club members have access to faster connection speeds and special offers. Follow these steps to connect to Aena Wi-Fi services.
In addition, there are computers with free Internet access for public use in terminals T1, T2 and T3.
Wi-Fi on commuter trains
The Spanish rail transport operator, Renfe, offers a Wi-Fi connectivity and entertainment platform, PlayRenfe. The platform is currently available in Getafe Centro, Nuevos Ministerios, Sol, Méndez Álvaro, Príncipe Pío and Atocha-Cercanías stations (time restriction: 30 minutes).
Wi-Fi on intercity buses
Almost every inter-city bus in the Region of Madrid offers free Wi-Fi to passengers. Also, there’s free wireless Internet/social media access at the Moncloa, Plaza de Castilla, Plaza Elíptica, Príncipe Pío and Avenida de América public transport stations, as well as in both light rail lines of Metro Ligero Oeste. Finally, you can use your mobile for Internet access in some 60 inter-city bus stops across the Region of Madrid.
